Enquire about Karni Liddell for your next event | As a teenager, Karni Liddell carved her presence on the international swimming scene. Her journey to success was a lot different from that of the typical elite athlete. Karni was born with the muscle wasting disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy and her parents were given the grim and devastating news that she would not crawl, walk or live past her teenage years.
Karni defied the medical profession learning to walk, and to also become an international swimming champion, representing Australia at two Paralympic Games. Her boundless love for sport has helped her achieve what many believed would be impossible. Through determination, focus and a lot of hard work, swimming became her passion and it improved her quality of life. Karni has often relied on her belief in the adage “Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do!”
Karni went into the Sydney Paralympic Games as the fastest woman in the 50m and 100m Freestyle in the world, after two months prior dislocating her shoulder as a result of her condition. Karni is passionate about the Paralympics, but is also passionate about altering the opinions of the public on disabled people. She has an outstanding and inspirational story to tell. Her story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and one that will move and inspire all who hear it.
