Enquire about Kevin Sheedy for your next event | Kevin Sheedy is the AFL’s most enduring contemporary coach, and arguably the most imaginative in the history of the craft. No one could reasonably term him predictable or lacklustre. He has never been a passive coach, and is well known for trying what commentators have often described as brave tactics.
Kevin Sheedy was presented with The Australian Thinker of the Year Award 2008 in recognition of his exemplary contribution to Australian Rules Football for 36 years, and his acknowledgement as the most imaginative thinker in the history of the game. Ambassador Sheedy of The Australian Football League has also provided national leadership and encouragement for more opportunities for Aboriginal people in football.
As a coach, Kevin Sheedy has always believed in trying his players in as many different positions as possible, and also in giving discarded players from other clubs a second chance. These moves haven't always paid off, however sometimes they have been crucial.
In 2007, Kevin Sheedy parted ways with Essendon Football Club after 27 years with the club. During this time he won four premierships (2000, 1993, 1985 and 1984). Kevin Sheedy was a record breaking coach at Essendon, and the second most games by any coach in the history of the game. Coupled with the 251 games as a player, it is the most combined games as a ‘player and coach’ in the history of the AFL. During which time some, competing sides had over a dozen different coaches.
Kevin Sheedy is in a league of his own for ideas. He has a remarkably fertile imagination, an insatiable desire to be different with the determination and confidence necessary to push his case, no matter how odd it may sound.
Sheedy is a catalyst for many changes: respect for interstate football during the 1980’s, an expanded interchange bench at the state and club level, a new level of versatility among players, the growing influence and confidence of Aboriginal players, clever manipulation of the draft (eg. off-loading three senior players including then-teenager Tony Delaney for untried 16-year-old Matthew Lloyd) and apprenticeships in football.
There are plenty of people in football who shake their head in despair when Kevin Sheedy’s name comes up, but ‘Sheeds’ won’t die wondering, and he has a handsome reputation among the football public. He excels at Presentations concerned with Positive and Lateral Thinking, encouraging staff and management to think outside the square, for company and personal pride.
Kevin Sheedy is the co-author of several books including, Sheeds – A Touch of Cunning, Pockets of Greatness, Football’s Women - the forgotten heroes, Second Chance Winners and Follow your Dreams and the Coaches 500 Club.
Kevin Sheedy was Honoured in 1998 as a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his service to sport and the community, and in 2001 he was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal. After his final match with Essendon, Kevin Sheedy received a standing ovation as he left the field for the last time. His passion for coaching continues alongside working in an ambassadorial position with the AFL.
