On the 22nd of September 1995, Major Glenn Todhunter on an instructor training flight crashed heavily from two hundred feet.
With the aircraft battery hanging on a damaged wire and fuel leaking from the right wing tank, Glenn was concerned about a potential fire.
He had felt nothing below his waist, Glenn pulled himself from the aircraft with his bare hands. He would lay for the next three and half-hours unable to make it into the shade of the wing.
The call for help was heard, and following amputation of both legs below the knee, Glenn spent the following two months in hospital.
So began the journey of rebuilding his life and dealing with the emotional, psychological and physical adaptations experienced along the way.
Glenn’s unique and inspirational story incorporates aspects of the next eight years rebuilding a life in which he learns to walk, drive and fly again. Today Glenn is still flying in the Army and is credited as being the only civil and military fixed and rotary wing amputee pilot to have served in the Australian Defence Force.
At the very least Glenn aims to inspire people personally through common life context, but at most aims to share the successful strategies learnt during his landmark journey. It is Glenn’s own concepts that he hopes will benefit an audience in whatever context is deemed relevant.
