In 2008, an underground mining accident irrevocably altered the course of Dean McSporren life.

While operating a coal-cutting machine and installing steel mesh for roof support, the drill caught the mesh Dean was holding. In an instant, Dean’s arm was pulled into the machinery, resulting in a catastrophic injury that tore through his forearm, destroying his fingers, hand, and arm up to just below the elbow. The severity of the damage left doctors with no option but to amputate. I woke up in the hospital, with his arm heavily bandaged, struggling to comprehend the life-altering reality.

The physical wound, though severe, was merely the opening act in a battle against the shadows of despair. At 40, a life once vibrant with the joys of building, surfing, motorcycling, and family, was abruptly thrown into disarray. The ensuing years were a tempest of emotional turmoil, a descent into depression and the grip of addiction, fueled by the very medications meant to alleviate pain.

Yet, amidst this darkness, a flicker of hope emerged. The arrival of a prosthetic arm, a tangible symbol of resilience, rekindled a sense of possibility. The journey was far from seamless, marked by the frustrations of relearning everyday tasks, the awkward encounters, and the sheer overwhelming weight of adapting to a new reality. But within this struggle, a profound strength was forged.

Fifteen years later, at 55, the narrative is not one of limitation, but of triumph. Dean learned that he’s restricted to just three things: he can’t wear a pair of gloves, block both his ears, or row a boat. He achieved far more than he ever thought possible as an amputee, and he attributes that to his personal motto.

It is a story embodied by a powerful motto: “He who is not courageous enough to accept challenges will accomplish nothing in life.” A motto not merely spoken, but lived.

Testimonials

Dean gave talks for four groups of our employees prior to Christmas 2024 to remind them of the importance of taking care of themselves and their workmates. He touched on mental health, family and the ripple effect of good and also poor choices. Dean spoke from the heart and was very well received across the board as a result. I would recommend any employer to engage Dean to talk to their workforce.
