Gabby Kanizay has successfully summited Mt Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu, three of the highest mountains in the world.  High altitude mountaineering is one of the deadliest sports in the world.

Gabby outlines her experiences on Mt Everest, and the journey it took to gain the necessary experience and skills to take on the challenge. Her journey began when at 14 years old she dreamt of one day climbing Mt Everest. She started this journey with a trek to Everest Base Camp at 15 years old in April 2018 with her Mum, Jane. Gabby then travelled to New Zealand to complete a mountaineering course where she learnt rope and harness skills, how to use crampons and ice axes, avalanche safety and other essentials.  She successfully summited three peaks above 4000m, four peaks above 6000m plus an 8000m summit Cho Oyu to prepare her for the extreme environment of Everest, considered to be in the ‘death zone’ above 8000m where oxygen content is only 34% compared with sea level. Her success on 14 May 2022 made her the Youngest Australian to summit Everest.

Words from her sherpa guide, Tendi Sherpa (14 Everest summits experience) describing her - “throughout the climb Gabby has been both mentally and physically so strong that on both mountains we passed all the traffic of climbers on our way up and the down safely, beside being a strong climber she is one of the most kindest person I have ever guided (sic).”

She has completed all of her mountaineering experience alongside her secondary school studies, successfully completing VCE in 2021 to gain access to a University place, which she deferred for her climbing and traveling Gap Year.  Gabby credits part of her success to the encouragement and support of her siblings Sam, Joe and Anna.
