Ivan Aristeguieta – an award-winning stand-up comedian, writer and performer, AKA the ‘Maracas from Caracas’ – is originally from Venezuela, South America, or as Aussies call him – ‘Mexican’. He gets it, they all sound the same.
For 10 years now, he has lived in Australia – living amongst locals, observing them, learning about them, and now making a very good living taking the piss out of them. He is a true blue, dinky-di Venez-stralian. Nah, she’ll be right! (Who is she by the way?)
He left Venezuela after he was carjacked at gunpoint (true story!). Gracias for giving him citizenship, Australia!
As a stand-up comedian, he has performed all over the world, from South America to the US, Canada, Japan, NZ and the UK, featuring on and headlining some of the biggest comedy festivals and rooms.
Audiences may have seen him on the telly or online, performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala (2016–2025), as well as the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, or as a guest panelist on shows including Have You Been Paying Attention?, The Project, The Weekly, Hughesy, We Have A Problem and The Living Room. In 2016, his Australian immigration experience was fictionalised in a short-form series, Lost in Pronunciation (ABC iView), which he co-created, co-wrote and performed in.
In 2021, his live show Pinata was nominated for the biggest award in Australian comedy – Most Outstanding Comedy at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival – and he has released three full-length comedy specials to date: Chorizo Sizzle (ABC iView), The Fourth Floor and Happy Papi, which was recently released on Paramount+.
He is also a trained cook, food technologist and brewer. He’s a loud and proud food nerd. During the pandemic he created and hosted the online sensation About This Much – Live, a ‘follow-along’ cooking party where he brought his kitchen to yours via Zoom. When he’s not performing, he’s probably making his own chorizo at home.
Thank you for entertaining our guests at our recent Delegates AGM Dinner in the Hunter Valley NSW. The feedback was nothing but positive, with our guests still laughing long after the night was over. Funny, engaging and thought provoking, getting in to (or is that on to…) bed every night will never be the same!
Once you understand he was also a stand-up comic back home in Venezuela, you can truly appreciate his talent for keeping the funnies rolling in whatever language he choses… brilliant show.
Aristeguieta's performance is outstanding... run to buy a ticket, on the off chance that there are still any available.
