Fabian Coulthard

Fabian Coulthard was born in England and the family made the move to New Zealand at an early age.  From the age of 6, Fabian demonstrated an enthusiasm for a career in karting and it wasn’t long before he was winning several New Zealand karting titles. He graduated to the New Zealand Formula Vee Scholarship and finished runner up aged just 12. At 16, Fabian joined Formula Ford and won the Championship in 2001 in dominant style, claiming victory over 14 out of 17 races before competing in Malaysia for the hotly contended Asian Festival of Speed. Driving an AF2000, Fabian won two races by over 14 seconds.

 

In 2002, Fabian competed in his first Australian race at the Grand Prix in Melbourne where he clean swept the Formula Ford support races, and in 2003 he returned to his home country, England, where he competed against Lewis Hamilton in the British Formula Renault Championship.

 

In 2004, where he competed in his first year racing in the Championship, Fabian achieved third place. He also claimed the Michelin Driver to Europe Award for best driver under 30 and was awarded the Michelin Rookie of the Year Award. 2005 was a fantastic year for Fabian as he was crowned the Champion at the final event at Phillip Island for the Carrera Cup Championship. In 2006, Fabian drove part-time for Paul Morris Motorsport and in 2008 he delivered 6x top 10 finishes and a strong result in Hamilton in New Zealand.

 

Fabian achieved his first podium in 2009 with Cruickshank at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains. Showcasing serious potential, he was recruited by Walkinshaw Racing to make the switch from Ford to Holden. In 2010, Fabian suffered a spectacular first lap crash at the Bathurst 1000 and went on to lead the team for a one-car operation.

 

2012 he joined the Brad Jones Racing team, taking the drive of the number 14 Lockwood Racing Commodore.  However, it was 2013 that was a standout year for Fabian. The introduction of V8 Supercars “Car of the Future” proved a winner in numerous ways. Fabian earned pole positions at the Texas and Phillip Island rounds, race wins in Texas and a double at Winton cemented 2013 as Fabian’s best V8 Supercar season to date.

 

In 2014 and 2015, Fabian celebrated a multitude of wins and podiums before joining Team Penske in 2016. In 2017, Fabian took four-wins on his way to a personal best third place in the Championship. 2018 produced another strong year as Fabian achieved a strong win at Winton and produced three podium results and 16 top-10 finishes to earn ninth place in the Championship standings. In 2021, Fabian Coulthard joined Team Sydney where he continues to race today.
